Reason to wake up in the morning

I have been making this almost every day for a month now. It’s just as easy as any instant oatmeal packet, wayyy more filling and it tastes better. Plus it has about a million times more nutrients, which is perfect for starting the day.

1 packet of plain instant oatmeal

2 tablespoons of cinnamon

3/4 cup frozen blueberries

1/4 cup raspberries

1 tablespoon local raw honey

2 tablespoons shredded coconut

Preparation time: 5 minutes

First start to boil 1/4 of a cup of water on the stove (can always use microwave too).

As the water starts to boil, add the oatmeal and cinnamon into the bowl you will be eating it from.

Next I take a strainer and run hot water over the frozen berries to defrost them. By the time that the berries are defrosted, the water should be boiling. Add the water and berries to the bowl. Go very light on the hot water, as the berries have a lot of moisture in them!

Next, drizzle honey on top of everything in the bowl.

Next add 1-2 tablespoons of shredded coconut. This really just gives it some sweetness/texture without adding any overpowering taste of coconut.

I also highly recommend adding any types of nuts or seeds that you have too, almonds, chia seeds ect.

Lastly, mix everything together and enjoy!

Why our human bodies love these ingredients:

Choosing to eat healthy always seems daunting but many of the recipes you already make can just be altered a little to be something that our bodies actually find useful and not confusing. For this recipe….

Oats are great for cholesterol and even can help regulate blood sugar.

Blueberries and raspberries in this are filled with antioxidants which are proven to prevent and fight cancer.

Cinnamon can reduce blood pressure, help regulate blood sugar and assist with kidney function.

Local raw honey – my favorite ingredient! I started eating this type of honey after my doctor recommended eating 1-2 tablespoons a day to help with my severe allergies. While it is easy to find it at farmers markets, sometimes making an extra stop is not always convenient (especially when you are grocery shopping after work at 11pm like I have been  lately!) I found the brand I am using now “Carpe Bee’m” from Westford, MA at Wegmans in Burlington.

Shredded coconut has iron and zinc in it which will help keep your immune system healthy.

While I use all organic ingredients for this recipe I think that the most important thing about making this is not if you use all organic ingredients, but the fact that you are making a conscious effort to put something into your body that has a purpose, while still enjoying it. Providing for our bodies should be one of the most important things on our to-do lists, because it is the only one we will ever get.
